Practical guide
Share a Windows folder with read and write access
Follow these steps using your existing folder. Computer and folder names shown are examples.
- On a trusted local network, choose the Private network profile in Windows settings. Enable network discovery and file sharing for that profile. Keep password-protected sharing enabled.
- On the host PC, open the database folder’s Properties > Sharing > Advanced Sharing. Enable Share this folder and give it a simple name, such as BaseProspective.
- Under Permissions, grant Read and Change only to the Windows accounts that need to use the database. Avoid granting Everyone full control.
- In the Security tab of the same folder, also grant those accounts Modify, Read and Write permissions. Both the share permissions and the folder permissions must allow these operations.
- From another PC, open \\OFFICE-PC\BaseProspective in Windows Explorer, using your own computer and share names. Sign in with the authorised host-PC account if Windows asks.
- Create and then delete an empty test file in that folder. If this works, select the same folder in Prospective. The host PC must remain on. Do not expose this share to the Internet.
